Hunting Safety & License
- Treat every firearm as if it were loaded. Being careless with unloaded guns means you might become careless with loaded guns.
- Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction at all times. Make it a habit to always be aware of where the firearm is being pointed.
- Keep your finger off the trigger with the safety on until you are ready to shoot.
- Remember once you shoot the bullet, you cannot take it back. Always identify your target and what’s beyond it. Never shoot at unknown movements, flat hard surfaces, or water to prevent ricochet. An earthen bank is the best backstop.
- Be sure the barrel and action are clear of obstructions by keeping dirt and debris out of the barrel. If the barrel is not clear, the tremendous pressures created can back up and create a very dangerous condition.
- Confirm that you only have ammunition of the proper size for the firearm you are carrying. The correct ammunition used in a firearm is normally stamped on the barrel and should match the description on the head of the case of the cartridge or shot shell.
- Unload firearms when not in use. Leave the action open. Firearms should be unloaded and carried in a case to and from your shooting or hunting area.
- Never point a firearm at anything you do not intend to shoot. This means no horseplay with a firearm. It also means never using a firearm to threaten a person.
